The study, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, is based on 24 known risk factors—such as age, smoking, diabetes, chronic pancreatitis, and family history—which help identify individuals most likely to develop the disease. The score was applied to a prospective cohort of 178 individuals with a high family risk from four European centers, as part of the IMAGene project, who were evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging. The results show that higher scores were associated with a greater number of potentially malignant lesions. External validation, conducted with nearly 300,000 participants from the UK Biobank, confirmed these associations. The authors conclude that this could be a feasible, noninvasive, and low-cost tool for risk stratification, although further studies will be needed before it can be applied clinically.

PMID: 42160519

doi: 10.1093/ije/dyag064

An international team—with significant participation from the PADO group at the ICO and IDIBELL, which includes several members of ALIPANC—has developed an epidemiological risk score for the early detection of pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancers due to late diagnosis.
